Max Payne 3 Mini Review

So I thought I’d write a little review on this game, just my thoughts on it. Just read it for what it is, my writing is pretty shit and I can’t be bothered proof-reading it. Happy reading…

Many people were a little skeptical after seeing images of Max Payne 3, they felt it lost the one aspect that made it such a unique game and that was the noir style mood and atmosphere the previous games had, suddenly everything was too bright and too colourful for a story about a pill popping detective on the beat.

When someone did end up doing a copy and paste job of the old Max Payne, we ended up with one of the worst movies to ever grace the silver screen. Rockstar went in a different direction but still sticking to the same principles as the previous incarnations and it’s paid off. Max Payne 3 is absolutely brutal in terms of story and gameplay. It slowly unfolds as you progress in the game and you slowly see how messed up the situation is. The story is told, jumping from past and present, it feels a little confusing at first but you realise that you’re following Max’s train of thought, which is emphasised by the great narration from Max himself.

What I felt Rockstar did best with this game were the little things, when Max went for a shoot dodge, and for me most of the time ended in a wall, his body would crumple as he hit wall rather than having his top half of his body mysteriously end up missing through it. They didn’t go down the unrealistic option of holstering a big weapon like a shotgun, on his back where there would be no holster, if you had a shotgun but were using a pistol, he would hold it in his off-hand. When he went to reload, he would hold the shotgun under his armpit as he was reloading. When he moved from side to side quickly, you could see Max shift his weight.

Although I did feel the controls on the console (PS3) a little clunky, the learning curve is not steep. There were some moments where I had to suddenly get into bullet time which was (R3) and found myself also pressing L3-Crouch as well in the heat of the moment, which sometimes didn’t end well.

The story and gameplay flow well together and so well that if I didn’t feel tired when I first played it, I would have finished it one sitting. The game is quite long, I had about 3 x 3 hour sessions, and that’s without searching for most of the collectables.

In terms of cinematography, it can be quite jarring at some times, like you felt like you had to look away or rub your eyes just to make sure they’re working ok. A lot of double vision, scene framing, pop up of spoken words; it was well done but at times you felt there was just too much on screen. Going from story to gameplay is seamless, Max will go through a door, dive behind a box and you’ll go straight into gameplay or he’ll jump onto a rope and as he’s coming down and it’ll initiate bullet time, you’ll be in the action. There are a lot of cut scenes, you’d hope it wouldn’t be like MGS4 or Asura’s Wrath and you’ll be happy to know it isn’t, there’s just as much gameplay as there are cut scenes, unfortunately there’s a lot and they’re quite long.

When it came to choreography, it was fantastic, a lot of moments where Max was put in a situation where he was either sliding off a roof or on a trolley while in bullet time and those transitions from story to gameplay is what makes this game special.

What also made this game quite special was the soundtrack, it defined each scene and moment, help making those transitions from Max getting his drink on to a broken out gunfight. Also includes, which I believe it to be Max’s theme song, which I feel is hauntingly beautiful and really gives you that sense of nostalgia.

That ends my review of this game, I decided to write this up because it is worth playing. Even if Rocktar did not add any new gameplay mechanics to the franchise, it is a great sequel.

Time to go through it again!
